Dr. Stanley Eugene Monroe, Jr. Ph.D. 67 of Houston, Texas. Monday, 21 June, 2011 in Houston, Texas from complications of kidney cancer.

Stanley Monroe was born 19 February, 1944 in Little Rock, Arkansas to Dr. Stanley E. Monroe, Sr. M.D. and Mrs. Eleanor Duncan Monroe. He was the eldest of their five children, and spent his childhood in the home they built together in Sherman, Texas. He graduated from Sherman High School, attended Texas Tech, Austin College, and Southern Methodist University, where he earned his Doctorate in Physics from the university and the title of Dr. Daddy from his children. He put his doctorate to excellent use working at several companies, including one he co-founded, but is best-known for his career working at the Johnson Space Center in Clear Lake City, Texas, first for Lockheed-Martin, and then for Jacobs Engineering. His number of awards and published papers grew every year, but the project he most loved was his work with the team helping the shuttle program return to flight after the Colombia tragedy.
He married Jean Hill Monroe on 3 October, 1981. They soon moved to Houston and lived there for nearly 30 years. Together they loved to play cards, visit with friends and family, and travel. Stanley worked his crossword puzzles in pen, admired the wit of Mark Twain, won at Trivial Pursuit against his wife and kids every time (even when they ganged up on him), and told better stories around the kitchen table at night than anyone around. His kindness and gentle nature were genuine, he was thoughtful without fail, and he made it a point to show respect to everyone he came into contact with. He retired from Jacobs Engineering in October, 2010, after 25 years, just as the space shuttle program was winding down. He very much wanted to spend his retirement traveling and playing cards with Jeani, visiting with family, and reading all those books in his library.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jeani, who cared for him these past few months with tenderness, love, and selflessness of the highest measure; his heartbroken children, Jenifer Monroe, Jason Monroe (Staci Louise Pereria Monroe), and Dean Anthony Stock; his grandchildren, Krystal Melody Thomason (Matt Thomason), Alexander Monroe Santarini, Nathan Monroe Santarini, Sophia Isolena Santarini, Willow Scharpen, Maxwell Stanley Monroe, and Oliver Martin Monroe; and great-grandchildren, Brandan Thomason and Hailey Thomason.
His beloved mother, Eleanor Duncan Monroe, grieves his loss, and is especially grateful she was able to visit him in the hospital in Houston. He will be so very missed by his siblings, Alan Duncan Monroe (Baceliza Monroe), Ronald Morris Monroe (Nancy Slaughter Monroe), Kathie Monroe Buchanan (John Buchanan), Elizabeth Monroe Woodard, and his nieces and nephews, Michelle Monroe, Chris Monroe, Paul Buchanan (Abbye Buchanan), Elizabeth Buchanan Harris (Ross Harris), Sarah Buchanan Raley (Ben Raley), Rebecca Monroe, Jessica Monroe, James Monroe, Emily Woodard Perez (Josue Perez), and Caleb Woodard.
His "Arkansas Cousins" Andrea Lee Wade (Phillip Wade), Marsha McCurry, Mary McCurry, and their mother, Geraldine Monroe McCurry were especially close to him, and he enjoyed wonderful relationships with his cousins Deanna McDowell (Tom McDowell), Donna McGaw (Ron McGaw), Edith Ann King (Ed King), Phillip Adams (Peggy Adams), his aunt Eleanor Duncan, and all his other extended family members.
He is also mourned by his mother-in-law, Virginia Rose Hill, sisters-in-law Jacquelyn Marie Hill, Dolores (Kaye) Dean, Mary Margaret Morrison, and Janice Conrad; brothers-in-law Kenneth Herbert Hill (Eileen Hill), and Richard John Hill.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Stanley E. Monroe, Sr., his uncles Edgar T. Duncan, Dr. Howard Monroe, Dr. Lance Monroe, Andrew McCurry, and Phil Adams, his aunt, Geneva Monroe Adams, his niece, Shannon Minor, cousin Geraldine Adams, father-in-law, John Kenneth Hill, brother-in-law David Dean, and his coworker and close friend, Barry Booker.
Services will be held on Monday 27 June, 2011 at 9 a.m. at Dannel Funeral Home, with Chris Vogelsang of Fairview, Texas, and Dr. Mike Lawson of First Baptist Church of Sherman officiating. Visitation on Sunday, 26 June, 2011 at 7p.m.
Pallbearers will be Alan Monroe, Ronald Monroe, Jason Monroe, Dean Anthony Stock, Chris Monroe, John Buchanan, and Phil Wade. Honorary pallbearers are Keith Black, Jeremy Wade, Christopher Reynolds, Paul Buchanan, James Monroe, Caleb Woodard, Alexander Santarini, and Nathan Santarini.
Internment at West Hill Cemetery, Sherman, Texas.
The family would like to thank Michael and Kathy Rollins, Richard Juday, Martha and David Loredo, John Fornet, and Dr. Cyril Wolf for their friendship, love, and support, most especially during Stanley's illness.
