Services for Bill O'Brien, 51-year-old retired football coach and teacher at Sherman High School, were held  Wednesday morning in Waldo Funeral Chapel. He died Sunday at his home in Sherman.  Rev. Bob Allen of Trinity Baptist Church officiated. Burial was in West Hill Cemetery.
Mr. O'Brien was born in Van Alstyne, son of William V. O'Brien and Juanita Hinton O'Brien. He attended Sherman public schools and graduated from Sherman High School and Austin College. On December 1, 1950, he married Doris Hope in Sherman.
During the 1950s, he served 8 years as a tank commander in the 49th National Guard unit in Sherman. His first coaching job was assistant football coach in Burkburnett for 6 years. He was later head football coach at Itasca for 2 years and at Whitesboro for 2 years. He spent the last 23 years of his career teaching health, biology and science at Sherman High School and was assistant football coach and head track coach there. He retired in 1990. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife; sons, Billy Cal O'Brien and Randy O'Brien, both of Sherman; mother, Juanita O'Brien Britton of Sherman; brother, Bobby Ray O'Brien of Sherman; 2 grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Clyde Marr, Ken Griffith, Bill McClure, Bobby Adams, Jimmy Hall and Bob Kendra.
Memorials may be made to Home Hospice of Grayson County, P.O.Box 2283, Sherman, 75091, or to Trinity Baptist Church.
