Ronald W. Mailes was born on January 11, 1933 at home in Newton County, Missouri.  The Lord called him home on the evening of December 27, 2022.  Ron led a very busy life during his 89 years.  The most important part of his life involved his family, friends, and travel.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Opal Mailes; his wife, Sammie Lou Mailes; his daughter, Melissa Mailes; his grandson, Grant Garza; and his brothers, Roy, Jim and Eldon Mailes; and sister, Norma Welker.
He is survived by his son, R. Mark Mailes and wife, Suzanne, of Houston; 2 grandchildren, Amanda Garza Perez and Gregory Garza; and 2 great-grandsons, Jayson Perez and Dylan Perez, all of Austin, Texas.
Ron was highly regarded as a basketball player.  He attended Pittsburg State College in Kansas on a scholarship.  He left college to join the Air Force during the Korean War and served his country proudly.
After his return from overseas, he married the love of his life, Sammie Lou.  When he was discharged from the Air Force, he returned to Pittsburg State and completed his teaching degree.  Later he also completed his Master's Degree at University of Kansas.  He served as a coach, teacher, counselor and school administrator in his 36 years
as an educator.  After retiring from Sherman ISD, he began his second career as a professional traveler, forming SR Travel.  SR Travel allowed Ron and Sammie to lead guided group tours all around the United States and many foreign countries and blessed them to form and maintain many wonderful friendships.
Funeral services were held Saturday morning, January 7, 2023 at Waldo Funeral Home, led by Minister Lou Williams.  Burial followed at West Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice in memory of Ronald W. Mailes.


Sammie Lou Mailes was born July 4, 1936 in Seneca, Missouri.  She passed away the morning of February 16, 2015 and she is now with the Lord.  Sammie led a very busy life during her 78 years.  The most important part of her life involved her family, the light of her life. 
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lorene Garman.
She is survived by her husband, Ron; son, Mark Mailes and wife, Suzanne, of Houston; daughter, Melissa Mailes Garza of Round Rock, Texas; 3 grandchildren, Amanda Garza Perez and husband, Ivan; Gregory Garza of Round Rock, Texas; and Grant Garza of Mission, Texas; 2 great-grandsons, Jayson and Dylan Perez of Round Rock.
She has a brother, Larry Garman and wife, Karen, of Pittsburg, Kansas; step-brother, David Montgomery and wife, Anita of Yukon, Oklahoma.  She is survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews.  She loved all her precious family.
She became certified as a Dear Ed interpreter spending 22 years for Sherman ISD.  Sammie and her husband, Ron, formed SR Travel and guilded group tours all around the United States and many foreign countries.  Many wonderful friendship were f rmed.
Sammie was born in Seneca, Missouri and lived most of her early life in that area.  She graduated from Seneca High School and attended college at Oklahoma A&M in Miami, Oklahama.
She married Ron Mailes on Apri l3, 1955 in Seneca.  After college in Pittsburg, Kansas, they then moved to Kansas City, Kansas.  Sammie and her family came to Sherman, Texas in 1970.  She retired from the Sherman schools in 1992 and traveled with friend and family even since.
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, February19 at Woods Street Church of Christ, led by Minister Jon Smith and a personal eulogy by Horace Groff.  Burial followed at West Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flo wers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association
of Great Dallas or to the Woods Street Church of Christ, Sherman, Texas.
