Jane Douglas Moorman, a distinguished educator, avid adventurer and native of Sherman, Texas, passed away peacefully at her home in Oakland, California on July 8, 2017.  She was 88.
Jane was born in Sherman on August 20, 1928, daughter of James Bolling Moorman, Sr. and Elizabeth Naylor Moorman.  She and her older brother, James, Jr. were raised in Sherman where their parents conveyed a strong intellectual acumen and dry sense of humor.
Jane was inspired into the field of education by her father, who was a professor and later became the longtime Dean of Austin College.  The school would play an important role throughout Jane's life.  She obtained her undergraduate degree at Austin College, and later returned to serve as Associate Dean of students.  After moving away, Jane proudly served on Austin College Board of Trustees for 25 years.
Jane's professional career included professional and senior administrative positions at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, the University of Wisconsin in Madison, and Barnard College in New York City.  She concluded her career at the University of California at Berkeley, where she retired as the Director of Counseling and Psychological Services.  Jane received numerous professional awards including the Austin College Meritorious Service Award and the Berkeley Citation for distinguished achievement and notable service to the University.
Jane's commitment to education was equaled only by her sense of adventure and love of animals; both strong personal attributed developed during her time as a young girl in Sherman.  An accomplished equestrian, she explored much of the world on horseback, including expeditions along the Pacific Crest Trail and across Kenya's Mara River Valley.  All who knew Jane experienced her keen wit and inability to suffer fools gladly.  Perhaps best known for calling it like she saw it, she will be greatly missed.
Jane is survived by her nieces, Ann Moorman (Dean Arnold) and Janet Berkstresser; her nephew, Tom Moorman (Betsy) and his children, Leslie Moorman and Zachary Moorman; and many wonderful colleagues and friends.
Memorial donations may be made to the Starlight Therapeutic Riding Program, 563 Centre Court, Alameda, California 94502.
