James Madison Merrill, 91, of Sherman passed away on Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at Texoma Healthcare Center. Arrangements are under the direction of Dannel Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 2, 2011, at 11 a.m. in Dannel Chapel with Rev. Rusty Denny of Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, Denison, officiating. Interment will follow in West Hill Cemetery.
James was born in Howe on January 29, 1920, to Joseph and Lula Maude (Cook) Merrill. After being educated in the public schools of Sherman, he moved to California. During WWII he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, having volunteered on November 7, 1941. During eight years of service, including time in Japan, he rose to the rank of Master Sergeant.
Returning to Sherman, he married Kathlee (Walker) Smith on January 29, 1986, at Crutchfield Baptist Church, with Rev. L.D. Beall, their good friend, officiating. James worked as a truck driver until he retired. He was a Baptist.
James was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and three brothers, and a son, Steve Merrill.
Survivors include his wife, Kathlee; two daughters: Charlotte Merrill and Peggy Collier; three stepdaughters: Sandra Hunter and husband Jim of Round Rock, Brenda Fox and husband Paul of Denison, and Debby Carpenter and husband Cecil of Pottsboro; a stepson, Dan Smith of Sherman; six grandchildren and six stepgrandchildren; six great grandchildren and seven stepgreat grandchildren.
