...Last Friday a plane carrying members of the Wichita State University football team, athletic staff and team boosters crashed in rugged mountain country near the Continental Divide.  Twenty-nine persons, 13 of them members of the school's football team, were killed.
A second plane carrying 23 other players and the rest of the staff landed safely at Logan, Utah where Wichita State was to play Utah State on Saturday.  The game was canceled.
The surviving players were returned home by commercial plane Saturday and were taken to a university dormitory complex....
Players on the plane that crashed were members of the team's first string who, by tradition rode with the coach.

NOTE: John Ray Taylor was one of the 31 players, coaches and boosters who died when one of the 2 chartered planes that was taking the team to Utah crashed in the Colorado mountains near the town of Silver Plume.  Taylor survived the crash but died from his injuries later.
