Senior Merchant, Abe Marks, Dies

Abe Marks, 78, Sherman's senior downtown retail merchant, died at 2:15 p.m. Saturday in a Houston hospital. He had been in ill health for several weeks.
Mr. Marks, whose residence was 615 N. Crockett, had been in the ready-to-wear business here for 54 consecutive years. He was owner of Marks Ready-To-Wear, 103 S. Travis.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday in Waldo Chapel. Burial will be in West Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Marks was born July 3, 1888, in Corsicana, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ben Marks, and married Miss Sadie Cohen 51 years ago in Corsicana. He was co-owner of the Marks Brothers Department Store before opening his ready-to-wear store.
A graduate of Corsicana High School, Mr. Marks served in many official, civic and fraternal capacities in Sherman. For 15 years he was a member of the City Council, once serving as mayor pro-tem, was a director for the Chamber of Commerce, president of the Retail Merchants Association and president of the Boy Scout Council.
In honor of work with Scouting, Mr. Marks last year was awarded the Silver Beaver.
Mr.  Marks was a member of Beth Emeth Temple, where he had served as president of the congregation, was a member of Travis Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite as a 32nd degree Mason, Hella Temple and Kiwanis Club.
Survivors include his wife of Sherman; a son, Louis Marks of Houston; a daughter, Mrs. A. C. Alltmont of Reserve, Louisiana; a brother, Sidney Marks of Corsicana; a sister, Miss Esther Marks of Corsicana; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
