Death Comes
Pioneer Sherman Business Man

Death came Wednesday at 0:30 a.m. to Robert W. Yates, 89, pioneer Sherman merchant who operated a shoe business at the same location on Travis Street for over 45 years.
In ill health, Mr. Yates retired from active business in 1932. He had been critically ill for the past week when he died at his home, 525 South Walnut.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. at Dannel Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Homer Thompson, assistant pastor of First Baptist Church. Burial will be in West Hill Cemetery.

Kentucky Native
Mr. Yates, a native of Dukedom, Ky., had lived in Sherman since 1881. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerome L. Yates. He was educated in public schools and at the Southwestern Presbyterian University of Clarksville, Tenn. He was one of the oldest members of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity which he joined in 1878 while a student at the Presbyterian school.
Before opening his own business in February, 1887, Mr. Yates worked as shipping clerk and bookkeeper with several Sherman firms, including the Merchants and Planters bank.
The Yates Shoe Store was first owned by Mr. Yates and the late John L. Bradley. At the time of its sale to the Wilson Dickerman firm in 1932, it was the oldest retail business in Sherman and during its entire history has been located at 123 North Travis.

Was Church officer
Mr. Yates was married to Miss Bertha Dickerman, Sherman native and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Dickerman in Sherman on Nov. 11, 1885. Mrs. Yates died in 1921.
A member of the First Baptist Church, Mr. Yates served as church treasurer from 1900 to 1908.

(side of article is torn)  He is survived by a son, Charles Yates, associated in business with his father for many years; and four daughters, Mrs. Louise Yates Evans, Mrs. Cora Lee Caywood, Mrs. Hubert Bookout, all of Sherman, and Mrs. J. C. Haskew of _____; a brother, Dr. R. G. Yates of Pensacola, Fla; a sister, ___ G. D. Miller of Dallas; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Charles Yates Jr. Warner Evans, Robert Evans, Burgess Buchanan, Rich___ __ingold and John Reid J____.
