Sara Elizabeth Wetzel Hughes passed from this life on Wednesday, February 17, 2021.  Her life will be celebrated with a graveside service at West Hill Cemetery in Sherman, Texas Monday morning, February 22, 2021.  Ken Mullens from Western Heights Church of Christ officiated.  Arrangements were under the direction of Waldo  Funeral Home.  Pallbearers were her grandsons, Jeramy Norsworthy, Spence Hughes, Robbie McGowen, Spencer Wilson, Taylor Hansard, and Seth Buechler.
Sara was born in Winters, Texas on December 14, 1919, daughter of Jesse Wetzel and Ruby Bedford Wetzel.  She graduated from Winters High School, North Texas State Teachers College in 1950 and received her Masters degree from Austin College in 1960.  She married James E. Hughes on December 19, 1948 in Winters, Texas and together they had 4 children.
Sara was a dedicated educator for many years.  She touched the lives of many students, serving as an elementary teacher in Sherman, having taught at Crockett, Crutchfield, and Washington Elementary schools. She retired from Sherman Public Schools after 31 years of service.  Sara also dedicated her life to service.  She was president of the Sherman Classroom Teachers Association and held  many offices in the teachers association of Delta Kappa Gamma, including serving as their president for serveral years.  She was a life member of the National Education Association, the Texas State Teachers Association, and the Texas Retired Teachers Association.  She was a charter member and first President of the Four Seasons Garden Club and served as a volunteer assisting victims of crime at the Grayson County Justice Center.  Sara was an avid bridge player, enjoyed playing the piano, and was a faithful member of the Church of Christ for many years at Grand Avenue, Parkview and Western Heights in Sherman.
Sara was preceded in death by her husband, James; parents; sisters, Billie Zentner and Rita Castleberry; and her son, James Brian Hughes.
She is survived by her 2 sons, Donald Hughes of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Daniel Hughes and his wife, Cynthia, of Houston, Texas; one daughter, Marita Hansar and her husband, Timothy, of Sherman; her 6 grandchildren: Kelly Norsworthy and husband, Jeramy, of the Woodlands; Spence Hughes and wife, Kelly, of Houston; Lauren Wilson and husband, Spencer, of Dallas; and Sara Hansard Buechler and husband, Seth, of Sherman; 2 sisters-in-law, Ruthie Collins and Liddell  Hughes.  She is also survived by her 8 great-grandchildren, Case Wilson, Adeline McGowen, William McGowen, George Norsworthy, Annie Hughes, Andrew McGowen, Jack Norsworthy, and Mary Claire Hughes.
