DENISON 62-50-35 YEARS AGO
by Dulce Murray

December 9, 1876
Cards are received in the city announcing the marriage of Dick Hopson of the Sherman Courier and Miss Mary Phillips, also of Sherman.  The ceremony was performed by Rev. Ben Spencer at the residence of the bride's father.
Dick Hopson, foreman of the Courier office, and wife were presented with a handsome silver service as a wedding gift by a few intimate friends, who, in spite of Dick's slyness, had become possessed of the secret of what was to take place.

THIRTY FOR VETERAN PRINTER
Sherman - Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon for Dick Hopson, 92, veteran left-handed printer, who was affectionately  known as "Uncle Dick."  He died here Monday afternoon at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bone, after a long illness.
He was born in Kentucky, the son of William and Elizabeth Hopson and came with his parents to Sherman in December 1861.  His father was a saddle and harness maker.
The family established its home in a 2-room log cabin.  At the time deer, turkey, prairie chickens and quail abounded on the site of the city.
President Cleveland appointed "Uncle Dick" post master of Sherman in 1894. He held the office four years.  After that he organized the Sherman Printing Company, which he operated until the time of his death.  He was a member of the Sherman school board six years.
For 25 years Mr. Hopson was connected with the old Sherman Courier.  His experience as a printer began in 1867, when at the age of 18, he became a printer apprentice in the Courier's office.
He was the second oldest member of the Travis Street Methodist Church, one of the oldest Masons in Sherman and a veteran member of the Typographical Union.
