BIOGRAPHICAL
Captain Roberts was born in Connecticut, September 29, 1836, having lived to attain eighty-four years.  He came to Sherman in April 1876 and in 1880 he embarked in business as the President of what is now the hardware firm of Roberts, Sanford and Taylor, retaining the position up till his death.
No man has lived in this community, who has held in larger degree the respect, confidence, and true friendship of the people among whom he has walked for forty-four years.  As a citizen he was largely identified with every movement affecting the welfare of this city, and always ready to meet every obligation toward its advancement.  For a long term of years he served wisely and failthfully on the board of trustess of the city schools, and was for many years a trustee of Austin College, and in this later capacity he stood unfalteringly by that institution through all its years of uncertain financial stress.
As a business factor in the commercial life of Sherman, Capt. Roberts was staunch in integrity, progressively large in vision, conservative in principle, and attained a very generous measure of success.
He was a communicant of the First Presbyterian Church in this city and a member of that faith practically all his life.  Soon after coming to Sherman, he was made superintendent of the First Presbyterian Sunday School, and held that position through a period of twenty-eight years.  He was chosen a ruling elder in his church in his early connection with its membership and up to his death he remained and served his Master and his church, and his daily walk was of unimpeachable fidelity to the faith he professed.  He loved his fellowman, and no appeal of material help, or human sympathy was ever made to him in vain.
Captain Roberts is survived by his wife, Mrs. Emma Roberts, and a son, Stanley Roberts, to whom he leaves the rich legacy of a life well spent, and full of good works.  In this sad time, they have the sympathy of a multitude of friends.
