SAD ACCIDENT
  _____
A Conductor Mangled by a Backing Train
  ________

Yesterday afternoon there was another sad accident in the Missouri Pacific yards, at Denison, in which Mr. James Langan, a young freight conductor was killed, having his head badly mashed.  The circumstances were about as follows, gathered from W.D. Lewis, engineer, and Tim Minahan, brakeman for the unfortunate man, who were examined before the jury of inquest, held by Judge Cook.
Mr. Langan had received orders and had given them to his engineer, Lewis, and had gone after other orders, and had read them to his crew standing between the engine and tender, and had told his brakeman, Minahan, to "go ahead and throw the switch, that they were all ready."  Then he stepped on the other track and was knocked down by a backing train pulled by engine No. 51, throwing the hind trucks of an empty coal car off the track.  When he was first seen by Engineer Lewis, he was being rolled over by the wheels, being dead.  Mr. Lewis and Minahath picked the unfortunate man up and carried him to another track.
His folks in Whitewater, Wisconsin, were telegraphed to, and up to this writing no answer has been received from them as to what dispositions to be made of the body.  He was a member of the Brotherhood of Engineers and  Condfuctors, members of which have made everything ready for the burial.
Mr. Langam was a single man, about 35 years of age, and had only resided in Denison since Dec. 29.  He was running on the Mineola and Denison.  The coroner's jury returned a verdict that the killing was accidental, and no one was to blame.
