FORMER COUNCILMAN, LINOUS JARVIS DIES
Linous Jarvis, who served more than three terms on the Sherman City Countil following his retirement form the life insurance business, died Saturday night at a Sherman hospital.
Funeral services for Mr. Jarvis, who was 82 years old, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Key Memorial United Methodist Church.  The Rev. Robert Walker of the church and the Rev. Jack Gibson of the First United Methodist Church in McKinney will officiate.
Burial will be in West HilL Cemetery.  Dannel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Jarvis was a district manager of the Reliable Life Insurance Co. in Sherman for more than 30 years and had never served in public office until his retirement.  He was a charter member and former president of the Texoma Life Underwriters' Association.
Mr. Jarvis was first elected to the Sherman City Council in 1976 and served two terms.  After leaving the council in 1980, he was named to the Sherman Housing Authority board of directors....In 1983 Mr. Jarvis was appointed back to the city council to replace a vacated seat and served one year of an unfinished term.  He was reelected in 1984 and served two more years.  Citing age and health as reasons for stepping aside, he did not seek another full term in 1986.
During the first year of his final term, Mr. Jarvis underwent heart surgery, but he recovered and was named Sherman Mayor Pro-Tem during his last year on the council.
He was a longtime active member of Key Memorial United Methodist Church and served as chairman of the building committee there.  He was also active in Sherman Noon Lions Club and in 1983 was named "Lion of the Year' by the club.  He was a member of the I.O.O.F., as well.
Mr. Jarvis was born Jan. 5, 1909, in Beckville, Texas, the son of Edmond T. and Mollie Fite Jarvis.  He attended schools there and married Ava Ora Allums on Dec. 12, 1931 in Beckville.
Surviving are his wife; sons, Thomas Lee Jarvis and Donald Linous Jarvis, both of Sherman, and Billy Wayne Jarvis of Bedford; daughters, Martha Ann Box of Dallas, and Sandra Kay White of Austin; sister, Ivy Langford of Carthage; and 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be grandsons: Randy Box, Taylor White, David Jarvis, Jeff Jarvis, Bob Jarvis, John Jarvis, Don Jarvis and Chip Jarvis....Memorials may be made to Wesley Village, 2800 Loy Lake Rd, Denison, Texas 75020, or to Key Memorial United Methodist Church, 901 E. Ava Ora Jarvis, 97, of Sherman passed away on Sunday, June 19, 2011. Arrangements are under the direction of Dannel Funeral Home. Memorial services will be held Friday, June 24, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Dannel Funeral Home with Rev. Jack Gibson of Custer Road United Methodist Church, Plano, officiating. The family will be at the funeral home following the memorial service. There will be a private interment service in West Hill Cemetery, with grandsons serving as pallbearers.
Ava Ora was born on Sept. 13, 1913 in Carthage to Lee and Lena (Sims) Allums. She was educated in the Carthage public schools and attended college at Stephen F. Austin State College. She married Linous Jarvis on Dec. 12, 1931, in Beckville. They moved to Sherman in 1939, and he served on the Sherman City Council and also as deputy mayor. He preceded her in death on April 6, 1991.
Ava Ora was a homemaker and also a food service manager, SISD, for 25 years. She was an active member of Key Memorial United Methodist Church, serving as president of the Key Bible Class and also a member of the Golden Keys and United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Sherman Red Hatter Society and the Sundowners Home Extension Club.
Ava Ora was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother, Aaron Allums, and two sisters: Ruth Allums Whitaker and Joyce Allums Sinclair. She is survived by two daughters: Martha Box and husband Steve of Dallas and Kay White and husband Steve of Austin; three sons: Thomas Jarvis and wife Jerri of Sherman, Bill Jarvis and wife Joyce of Sherman, and Don Jarvis and Sue Terry of Sherman. Survivors also include 15 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and two great-greatgrandchildren.
The family wishes to thank all of Ava Ora's caregivers, especially Lois Raines and Mary Ortega, who have cared for her several years. Also to the staff of Home Hospice for their loving care.
