Professor Frank Ben Hughes was the only son and youngest child born to William Johnston Hughes and Addie Smith.  He was born, as were his three sisters and parents in Tennessee on Thursday, December 11, 1873.  Frank's father died in 1897; just three years later the widowed Addie Smith along with her son and three single daughters is living in Ward 1 of Denison, Grayson Co., Texas.  Addie operated a rooming house at 200 West Gandy.

Martha "Mattie" Hughes, the oldest daughter and child, is living in the rooming house with her mother and siblings and lists her occupation as a music teacher.

Filda Adelia Hughes is also living with her mother and siblings in 1900 in Denison and her occupation is music teacher, as is her older sister's.  Little is know of the youngest daughter, Dixie.

Upon arriving in Denison, F. B. Hughes acquires a position as a teacher and in just four short years, he becomes the Superintendent of the Schools for Denison.

Addie Smith Hughes died in 1907 and is buried in Fairview Cemetery along with her daughters.  According to the 1913 City Directory, F.B. Hughes is the head of the household, including his sisters, living in the house at 200 West Gandy.  He continues in his role as Superintendent of Denison city schools until his retirement in 1937 at the age of 64.  By the 1940 census F.B. Hughes is the Postmaster in the local post office at Denison.  He is single and living alone.  His death occurs on Wednesday, January 22, 1941.
