E. G. Douglass married Mattie G. Anderson in Grayson County, Texas, 20 Feb 1867. That is the same date that Martha provided on her Widow's Application for a pension. Martha Douglass stated that she was born in Huntsville, Missouri. (Huntsville is in Randolph County.)

James Douglass, 26, and Mattie, 20, have a son, William, born May 1870. Also in the same household is Mattie's brother, J. M. Anderson, 26, with his wife Mary, 18, and Price Anderson, 7. Mary is Mary Lucy Erwin, and Price Anderson is Sterling Price Erwin (orphan), youngest child of William Hugh Erwin. All individuals except the infant were born in Missouri.

1880 TX census, Grayson Co.
Elbridge G. Douglass, 36, and Mattie J., 31, have 3 children. Willie is 11; Ida L. is 7; and Elbridge G. is 3.
Elbridge is a city marshall in Sherman.


1900 TX census, Fort Bend Co.
Elbridge G. Douglass, 56, is listed as head of the 20 staff members, all white, of the institution. All inmates are black.
Elbridge is a Sergeant at the Fort Bend State Farm Convict Camp.

1900 TX census, Fort Bend Co. Martha J. Douglass, 50, has 3 children in the home. Lulu M. is 18; Edith M. is 15; and Ida D. Redman is 27.



Elbridge was twice elected as a Texas Senator from District 18.

ELBRIDGE GEARY DOUGLASS. among the new Senators appearing for the first time in the Twentieth Legislature of the State of Texas, is the Honorable E. G. Douglass, of Grayson county. Mr. Douglass is a farmer, with broad and liberal views of the needs of the people, thoroughly acquainted with the lines of business and trade, and of the necessary legislation required to promote prosperity. He is a native of Missouri, forty-two years of age, and has been in Texas twenty- eight years. He was prompt and attentive to the business of the Senate, and has fairly and favorably won the confidence and esteem of his co-legislators. He is not especially demonstrative in making speeches, but serves the interests of his constituents more particularly in what he does and how he votes. He is tall and Avell proportioned in figure, and of good address. He is a member of the following committees, viz: Finance, Penitentiaries, Military Affairs, and chairman of the Committee on Privileges and Elections.

Captain E. G. DOUGLAS Dead
Sherman, Texas, Dec. 21: Captain E. G. DOUGLAS, age 64, superintendent of the state reformatory at Gatesville, died Thursday night from a complication beginning in partial paralysis of the brain. Burial occurred at Gatesville Friday afternoon under the auspices of the Knights of Pythias of which the deceased was a member.

His wife and four children-WILL DOUGLAS of Sulphur, Oklahoma, ED DOUGLAS Jr. of Cleburne, Mrs. IDA REDMON of Cleburne and Mrs. EDITH EMANUEL of South Texas-survive him.

Capt. Douglas was a native of Middle Tennessee but went with his family to Missouri when but a child, and thence to Texas in 1857. His father, Maj. BILL DOUGLAS, located on Iron Ore Creek north of Sherman where the family lived for several years, but later moved to St. Jo, Montague County. At that place, both Capt. Douglas' parents were buried.

The deceased enlisted in Burnett's Battalion of Confederate sharpshooters, organized in North Texas, and was under Capt. JIM HURT, later a member of the Texas Criminal Court of Appeals. He served through the war between the States. Later he served the public as a peace officer in lesser places for several years. Capt. Douglas was elected chief of police of Sherman which place he held four years and in the following election, became sheriff of Grayson County, which office he filled for four years during one of the most stirring portions of the country's history so far as law enforcement is concerned. He became state senator for the district consisting of Cooke and Grayson counties and at the conclusion of his term accepted the appointment to the superintendency of the state prison at Rusk. With change of administration, he became manager of the state penal farm at Harlem. On Jan. 1, 1907, he assumed the duties of the state reformatory at Gatesville.

Mattie Douglass, 63, is the mother-in-law of Charles B. Emanuel, in whose household she resides.

Although the site of her interment is unknown, her son William M. Douglass is buried in Oaklawn Cemetery, Sulpher, Murray County, Oklahoma. William was the county treasurer.
