W.H. Griffith, 72, a resident of this community for 61 years, died Thursday morning at 7:15 o'clock at his home on W. Main St.  He had been in failing health since he was injured almost four years ago when a tree fell on him, causing permanent injuries.  Heart trouble was the immediate cause of his death.
Born November 16, 1868, in Ripley Co., Missouri, a son of the late Sylvester Griffith and Lettie Griffith West, he came with his parents to Texas when he was eleven years of age.  He was married December 20, 1894, to Miss Maude Rogers, and they never moved away from this community.  In addition to farming actively and later managing his farming interests, Mr. Griffith for several years was a grocery merchant here.
Four years ago while a tree was being cut down at his home, he went out to relieve the man for a brief time.  Members of the family say that he had made no more than a dozen cuts when the man called to him to run as the tree gave indications of falling.  Heavy top branches of the three foot trunk struck Mr. Griffith to the ground.  His injuried included a shattered hip bone, a punctured lung, internal injuries, and complete body bruises.  He recovered sufficiently to walk without the aid of a cane and to pursue his ordinary daily routine, but was never well afterward.  He had been suffering from heart trouble for several weeks and for ten days had been critically ill.
Funeral services were conducted at the family residence at three o'clock this afternoon with Rev. R.E. Moore, a Baptist minister, in charge of the service.  Interment was at Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of G.T. Summy.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Claribell Homer, who makes her home with her parents; a granddaughter, Gretchen Homer; one brother, Rev. J.L. Griffith of Denton; two half-brothers, N.E. and C.E. West of Whitesboro; a sister, Mrs. Annie Passmore of Bristow, Oklahoma; and his 91-year-old father-in-law, J.A. Rogers who had made his home with the Griffith family for seventeen years.
