Rev. John P. Stanfield was the second of 13 children born to Ephraim Alpheus Stanfield and Sarah Priscilla Powell.  He was born and raised in Halifax County, Virginia until 1818 when his family moved first to West Virginia and then settled in Graves County, Kentucky where he married Mary E. Boone, a lineal ancestor of Daniel Boone, on October 29, 1840.  Mary was born in 1822 in Virginia and died in 1858 in Tennessee.  Together they had 10 children.
At the age of 21 John P. Stanfield was called to preach the gospel work, which he continued to do until he was 83 years of age.  In 1861 he was associated with the Western Conference.
Late in life Rev. Stanfield married Mary, next to whom he is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Whitesboro.
