Whitesboro - Funeral services for Dorothy Hatfield Russell, 88, were held Monday, October 27, 2008 at the First Baptist Church, Whitesboro, with Rev. Mike Flanagan officiating.  Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery, Whitesboro.  Services were under the direction of Meador Funeral Home, Whitesboro.
Mrs. Russell was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Russell, retired captain for the Dallas Fire Department; her parents, Lee Roy and Velma Hatfield; sister, Louise King; and brother, Willie Guy Hatfield.
Survivors include sister, Polly Varley of Albuquerque, New Mexico; brother, Leon Hatfield of Dalhart; children, Brenda Butler and husband, Grady, of Nashville, Tennessee; Dick Russell and wife, Terrie, of Dallas; and Joe Russell and wife, Sylvia, of Pilot Point.
Mrs. Russell had nine grandchildren: Belinda Pandey of Nashville, Tennessee; Greg Butler of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee; Sherilyn Butler of Sarasota, Florida; Rick Russell of Manhattan Beach, California; Kerrie Smith of Dallas; Becca Cole of Dallas; Matt Russell of Murphy; Jim Russell of Kaufman; and Ryan Russell of Denver, Colorado.  She also had 13 great-grandchildren.
The Russells were very active in First Baptist Church, Whitesboro, where they were choir members and were the cooks for many years for youth retreats at Falls Creek, Oklahoma.  Mrs. Russell was noted as a great cook and loved sharing her dishes with friends and family alike.  Her speciality was pies.  People also asked for her peanut brittle, party mix, and sausage balls.
Mr. and Mrs. Russell were former members of the North Dallas Baptist Church for 30 years, leaving there in 1974.  A friendship of 11 women, a former Dallas Sunday School group started in 1942 and named "The Sewing Club of the North Dallas Baptist Esther Class," continued to meet monthly until the last couple of years.
They were members of Jolly Good Sams and Ramblin' Sams trailer clubs for about 20 years and enjoyed traveling around the country in their travel trailer with friends and family.
