Whitesboro

Rebecca Ruth Cole was born at home on December 11, 1927 in Collinsvill e, Texas, daughter of Roy "Shorty" and Reba McMenamy Scott.  She left this life on the evening of January 8, 2021 in McKinney, Texas after a very brief battle with COVID.  Our "Memie" was a very healthy, spunky, feisty, active 93-year-old before she contracted this deadly virus which took her life in a matter of days.  Just 15 minutes prior to her passing, she was laughing and joking with her caregivers.  Our family would like to extend a huge thank you to those caregivers at the McKinney Medical Center who extended a loving hand to hold and a reassuring smile when we could not be there to do so.
Rebecca spent her childhood and most of her adult life in Whitesboro, Texas where she raised her children, Beverly and Randy.  She graduated from Whitesboro High School in 1945 and worked at the Rexall Drug Store for 25 years and then the Axtell Drug Store until her retirement.  She was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church. She married John Cole in March of 1976 and was a loving wife to him until his death in June 1994 and remained a loving stepmother to his kids and grandmother to his grandchildren.
In 2014 Rebecca moved to McKinney, Texas to be close to her daughter, Beverly, and her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren.  She was young at heart and remained very active in her senior years.  She attended all the sporting events, theater productions, dance recitals, graduations, birthday celebrations and any and all family events she could.  Pre-COVID, she danced three to four times a week at the Senior Centers in McKinney, Whitesboro and Sherman.  Recently she was thrilled when her group of friends started meeting weekly at a local part to have a socially distanced lunch and fellowship with one another.  Her favorite pastime was playing cards and dominoes as often as she could.  She especially loved playing with the other residents of her retirement community, The Grand Reserve.  She also loved playing the slot machines on her trips to the casinos, where she usually was a winner.  She enjoyed southern home cooking, particularly meat loaf,  sweets of any kind, but especially lemon-flavored desserts, and enjoyed watching the fireworks show on the family's annual reunion trip to Lake Murray on July 4th.  She loved watching sports of any kind, but football was her passion.  She was a diehard Dallas Cowboys and Whitesboro Bearcats fan and anytime they were playing, she could be heard cheering them on very loudly from the stands or in front of the TV!
She is survived by her daughter, Beverly Ruth Cheatham and her grandchildren, Craig and wife, Kathi; Amy Ruth and husband, Mark; and Casey; and great-grandchildren, Tyler and Madison Cheatham; Harrison and Landrey Ruth Krodel; and Aiden, Colton, Dawson and Ava Cheatham; and her sisters, Dorothy Scott Prentice and Roylene Scott Winchester (Windy); and many nieces and nephews who called her, "Aunt Beck."
In addition to her husband, John, she was preceded in death 3-1/2 weeks ago by her son-in-law of 53 years, John Cheatham; her son, Randy in January 1985; and her parents.
Graveside services were held Sunday afternoon, January 17, 2021 at Oakwood Cemetery in Whitesboro.  At the family's request and in an effort to try and protect our friends and families from the virus that took "Memie's" life, masks are required.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to the St. Jude's Children Hospital or North Texas Food Bank. - - - Scoggins Funeral Home
