J.W. Carter, found shot along Hwy. 5, by two off-duty sheriff's deputies, died Tuesday at a Sherman hospital.  Van Alstyne Justice of the Peace, Otto Cunningham, said he has not made a ruling on the death, but he said he did not suspect foul play.
Deputies Tom and Barbara Mrozinski found Carter lying near his pickup truck parked alongside Hwy. 5 south of Howe.  Mrs. Mrozinski said it appeared Carter had been shot by a .410 gauge shotgun found nearby.
Services were held Wednesday afternoon, April 16 at Waldo Funeral Chapel for Carter, 70, of Howe.
Services were conducted by Carl Ford, chaplain of Disabled American Veterans and Rev. Sam Randolph of Howe First Baptist Church.  Burial was in Whitemound Cemetery.
