Signs of Cold Weather Coming

The first frost of Autumn comes in "about 6 to 9 weeks" after the katydids are heard singing . . . 1st 'killing' frost' - 3 months.
Frost comes only after cockleburs are ripe.
Thunder in FEBRUARY means frost on the same day in May.
Crackling fires and popping firewood indicate snow.
Smoke rising fast in thin curls indicates snow.

If heavy frost accompanies a dark, cloudy sky, expect severe storms and freezing weather.
When worms and grubs are found close to ground surface . . . no frost.

Signs of Severe Weather Ahead

If tree leaves are unusually thick and dense
If fur is extra thick on coons, bears and other animals
If there is a big crop of walnuts and acorns
If cherries and spring flower bushes bloom late in the Fall
If many big woolly caterpillars appear in late summer

Snow Omens
If snowflakes are large, storm will end soon.
If small flakes, expect a heavy snowfall.
If snow continues to lay on ground and melt slowly, it may be 'waiting' for another snowfall.
The number of sunny days between July 1st and September 1st, multiplied by two, indicated the number of freezing, cold winter days due.
The number of days the first snow remains on ground (3, 4, etc.) foretell the number of deep snows due for the winter.
The number of days the moon is old (beginning from the date of NEW MOON) when the first snow falls, indicates the number of snows to expect for winter.
