PIONEER CITIZEN DIED WEDNESDAY
J.D. Badgett, aged 77, died at his home in this city Wednesday afternoon at 5:20 o'clock.  Up to five weeks ago Mr. Badgett was a "hale" man for his age, when he was stricken with paralysis which gradually grew worse until the end came.
Mr. Badgett was born at Oxford, North Carolina, October 11, 1846 [sic]..  He was married to Miss Fannie Currin November 11, 1872.  To this union six were born, five of whom survive.  In 1879 he moved to Texas and settled near this place.  About twelve years ago he moved to Whitewright to make his home.
In the spring of 1862, at the age of 17, Mr. Badgett joined the Confederate Army.  He was a member of Company G, 30th North Carolina Regiment.  He was wounded twice, each time being confined to the hospital for several weeks.
In early manhood Mr. Badgett gave his heart and life to his Lord, becoming a member of the Baptist Church.  He lived a life that was consistent with professions and died in the full triumph of a Christian's faith.  Those who knew Mr. Badgett well will join us in saying that he was a man who loved his fellows and delighted in being helpful and useful.  He was cordial and agreeable and loved by all who knew him.  When Mr. Badgett breathed his last, Whitewright lost one of its best citizens.
Mr. Badgett is survived by his wife and the following children:  Mrs. Will Simmons and Misses Monta and Eddie Badgett of this place; Mrs. C.R. Truett, Whitesboro; and Mrs. Jim Blanton of Plainview.  He is also survived by a brother, S.H. Badgett of Whitewright, and a sister, Mrs. Will Young of Rockfield, Kentucky.
The funeral service was held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the late residence.  The service was conducted by Rev. J.L. Truett, who was assisted by Rev. G.M. McNeilly and Rev. J.F. Fender.
Interment was at the City Cemetery.  The floral offerings were beautiful and covered the mound of the new-made grave.
The active pallbearers were J.B. Dickson, R.L. Johnson, W.C. Cook, W.F. Holland, W.H. Stedham, and R.B. Gordon.
Honorary pallbearers were J.H. Reeves, H.F. Thompson, J.A. May, J.F. Lilley, R.C. Montgomery, C.B. Bryant, Sr., J.R. Andrews, W.T. Hamilton, Spivy Badgett, J.P. Autrey, B.F. Blanton and John Pierce.
