Bernie Marshall Loses Life in Pool
Funeral services for Bernie Marshall, 17 years old, were held from the Methodist Church at 11 o'clock Tuesday morning, conducted by the pastor, Rev. L.G. Hagard, assisted by Rev. W.H. Ackley, pastor of the First Baptist Church.  Interment was at the City Cemetery.
Young Marshall was drowned Sunday afternoon while swimming with three companions in the Sears pool a mile southeast of town.  His companions were not good swimmers and were unable to assist him when he was apparently stricken with cramps while in deep water.  After he sank, his companions went to the home of Mr. Ford who lived near the pool for assistance, and Mr. Ford dived for the body several times without success.  Assistance was summoned from town, and after about 2 ho urs, the body was recovered by the use of a hook from the fire department.
Bernie Marshall was born December 3, 1914, near Mt. Vernon and came to Whitewright with his mother, Mrs. N.M. Marshall 3 years ago.  He un ited with the Methodist Church at Rogers, New Mexico in 1927, and after coming to this city identified himself with the Methodist Sunday School and young people's department.  Members of this department comprised the choir for the funeral services and also provided pallbearers.
He is survived by his mother and 5 half-brothers and 5 half-sisters.
The youth had been employed at Gates Bakers for about 18 months, using his earnings to provide a home for his mother.

Editor's Note: Texas Death Certificate lists his parents as Milton  Byrd Marshall and Melissa.
