J.R. Carter Died at Jacksonville Monday
J.R. Carter, for a number of years a citizen of this section, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H.R. Duke, near Jacksonville, Monday afternoon.  The funeral and burial services were held here Wednesday.
Mr. Carter was born September 2, 1849, and moved to Texas with his parents in 1859, coming to this state from Tennessee.  They first settled at Bonham, later moving to Sherman.   In the early eighties Mr. Carter moved to the Canaan community, north of town, where he lived until he moved to Whitewright.  He was public weigher here for a number of years.  He moved to Jacksonville about six years ago to make h is home with his daughter.  About eight years ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he never fully recovered.
Mr. Carter was known to practically every man in this section up to the time he moved away, and no one had more friends than he.  He was a kind-hearted man and was ever ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.  Nearly forty years ago he was converted and joined the Methodist Church.  He was prominent in lodge circles and was a member of several fraternal societies.  He lived up to the obligations of the societies and was a useful citizen.  The world is better by his life of more than three score and ten years.
The body arrived here Wednesday morning on the 11 o'clock M K T train and was met by a large number of former friends.  The funeral service was conducted by Rev. W.A. Stuckey and Rev. J.F. Fender at Methodist Church immediately following the arrival of the body.  Interment was at the City Cemetery.
The deceased is survived by his wife and two children, Mrs. H.R. Duke of Jacksonville and George Carter of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, and a brother, J.M. Carter of Tom Bean.
A number of out-of-town relatives and friends attended the funeral service.

Editor's Note: His wife appears to be buried here as well.  Her death certificate reads "Mrs. J.R. Carter."
