Large Crowd Attends Funeral of P.M.Baker, Here Sunday

On Saturday morning April 2, 1938, one of Van Alstyne's most loved citizens was called to his final reward. Following a few weeks’ illness, P.M.Baker, better known as "Doc" Baker, age 69, died at the family home in College addition of pneumonia.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 3, at the First Baptist church with the Rev. Frank Johnston, pastor, conducting. Burial was held in the Van Alstyne Cemetery, directed by Fox-Fanning Funeral Home.
Mr. Baker was born Feb. 16, 1869, at Mantua. He joined the Baptist church in 1912; the Woodmen of the World lodge in 1904. He was twice married, first to Miss Elizabeth Burrows, who died. Children surviving from that marriage are Mrs. Fred Dixon of Sherman, Marley Baer of Borger, J. B. Baker of Cortez, Colo., and Mrs. A. B. Sheppard of Dallas.
He was later married to Mrs. Ola Taylor, who survives him. Children surviving from this marriage are Mrs. A. W. Goodnight of Dallas and Joe Baker of Nederland.
Stepchildren surviving are Mrs. Jewell Odell of Lubbock, Holly Taylor of Kilgore and Mrs. I. B. Griffith of Nederland. There are a number of grandchildren.
The active pallbearers were: Harley James, John Dailey, Travis Enoch, Alvin Ayres, D. O. Hall, Lon Gleaves, R.H. Bowen and L.C. Clayton.
