Family visitation will be held Thursday, July 29, 2001 from 6 PM to 8 PM at Scoggins Funeral Home, located at 637 W. Van Alstyne Parkway in Van Alstyne.
Carl was born on February 26, 1932 to Jack and Bea Guthrie in Abilene, Texas. He was the oldest of four children and is survived by all of his siblings, Bill, Dennis, and Sharon. His father, Jack, worked in the oil industry and the family frequently moved to follow the work. Mena, Arkansas was one of the family’s favorite locations and was always very special to Carl. Carl had a close bond with all of his siblings, each in a different way. Bill was his best friend; the two have never really been separated, even when living miles apart. Dennis was a bit younger and Carl has always been the protective older brother. Carl was 18 when his baby sister, Sharon, was born and drove his mother to the hospital when she went in to labor. Carl has always had a passion for music and played in a band with his brothers growing up; they even appeared on a local telethon! It is also rumored that he was known fight when he was younger – which is completely unbelievable to anyone who knew Carl.
In May of 1953, Carl and his brother, Bill, went to Cisco to attend church with Bill’s girlfriend, Sonja. Sonja brought her cousin, Wanda, along since she knew Bill was bringing his brother. Carl was instantly smitten with Wanda and came up every weekend to see her. Wanda was beautiful and could have her pick of many suiters. However, she couldn’t resist Carl’s bright blue eyes and the two were married on May 30, 1953.
Wanda wasn’t thrilled that Carl’s primary transportation was a motorcycle and made him purchase a family car. Years later, as a couple, they would travel the country for decades on the back of a motorcycle.
Carl and Wanda welcomed their first son, Darrell, on July 26, 1954 and their second son, Dwaine (Stuart), on April 25, 1956. Carl was preceded in death by his only daughter, Carla, who passed away shortly after being born due to a heart defect.
Carl has a very diverse work history and has ‘retired’ many times. He worked in the oil fields, was a pole climber with the electric company, drove the school bus, and was a courtesy driver for car dealerships. He was always active and enjoyed working; it kept him young. For many years he drove the bus for the 8th grade field trip to NASA which was the highlight of middle school.
Carl treated everyone like family; and he loved his family deeply. He had an amazing way of making everyone feel like they were his ‘favorite’. He somehow remembered hundreds of birthdays and insisted on singing to each one. Annual family reunions were always the highlight of his summer. He would be one of the first to arrive to have coffee with his cousins before the crowed arrived.
The only thing more important to Carl than his family was God. He dedicated his life to the Church of God and it was his greatest passion. He started the Yeshua Riders branch of his favorite motorcycle gang, Christian Motorcycle Association (CMA).
Most knew Carl by the nickname Pogo, Bubba, or Pawpaw. He was usually either singing, praying, or crying tears of joy.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Bea Guthrie as well as his daughter Carla and 2 great-grandchildren Riley Flowers and Michael Church. He is survived by his wife, Wanda, of 68 years, his son Darrell and wife Sonya Guthrie, his son Dwaine (Stuart) and wife Helen Guthrie, 3 granddaughters Angela Adams, Sunny Mayes, Latosha Guthrie and 3 grandsons, Zach Parpart, Nicholas Guthrie, and AC Guthrie. He has 17 great-grandchildren, and dozens of nieces and nephews, and countless cousins.
While he will be missed by all, his life is truly one to celebrate. There is no doubt that he is positioned at the feet of Jesus.
