Umphress - Van Alstyne, Texas, July 31. - James C. Umphress, 76 years of age, an aged citizen of this place, died at the family home on Preston street last night, following an operation performed several days ago. Mr. Umphress moved to this community from his native State of Alabama in 1870. A poor man when he came here, he has amansed large holdings in lands and business concerns, beiing identified with practically every industrial plant in the city. He was a member of the Methodist Church and Masonic lodge.
Mr. Umphress served through the war between the States, being among the first to answer the call of his Southland, as a member of Company K, Thirty-Eighth Tennessee Regiment, and was with General Bragg in many of his hardest battles. He is survived by his wife and six children, John, Lyman and Mrs. Spencer Taylor of this place, Mrs. L. L. Henderson of Dallas, Mrs. H. L. Davis of McKinney and Mrs. Paul Bean of Sherman.
The funeral services were held at his home this afternoon at 4 o'clock followed by interment at Van Alstyne Cemetery.

Grayson Pioneer Dies at 87 Years

Van Alstyne - Mrs. J.C. Umphress, 87, nee Miss Julia Caroline Veazey, pioneer of Grayson county, died at her home Saturday at 9:30 p.m. following a few days illness.
Mrs. Umphress was born in Hoganville, Ga., in 1845, and came to Texas with her husband and two children in 1870, settling in old Mantua community, later coming to Van Alstyne with the coming of the railroad.
Her husband preceded her in death a few years ago.  To them nine children were born, five of whom survive. They are: Mrs. H.L. Davis, McKinney; Mrs. L.L. Henderson, Dallas; John and Lyman Umphress and Mrs. Spencer Taylor, Van Alstyne.  She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and a brother, George C. Veazey of Van Alstyne, who is the only survivor left of her 13 brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Umphress joined the Methodist church in early childhood and was a loyal supporter of its institutions until the day of her death.
Funeral services were held Monday at 3 p.m. at the residence.  The Rev. Cicero B. Fielder of Iowa Park, assisted by the Revs. H.S. Porter and E.L. Stanford officiated.  Pallbearers were her grandsons: Don O. Davis, Harry Bean, Lyman Davis, Carl Umphress, carter Umphress, Robert Fielder and Henry Hynds.  Interment was in Van Alstyne Cemetery, Yoder undertaking company having charge of arrangement
