Early Settler Dies at Age 81
J.H. McKinney Lived at Van Alstyne

  Van Alstyne - Jack Handley McKinney, 82, life-time resident of the Van Alstyne area, died early Sunday morning at his home after an illness of four weeks.  Funeral services were held Monday morning at the Christian church, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Lennox, pastor.
  Interment was in Van Alstyne cemetery, with the following pallbearers: Roy Cantrell, Gus Lewallen,
O.A. Stoute, Cage Hunter, Roscoe Carver and Jim Kitching.

  Mr. McKinney was born Dec. 3, 1860, at the old McKinney homestead east of Van Alstyne, a son of D.L. and Martha McKinney.  In 1887 he was married to Miss Rachel Marr, who died July 3, 1940.  The couple had four children, one dying in infancy and a son, Vernie, a world war I veteran, died in January 1927.  He was one of nine children, six boys and three girls, all living to be grown.  At the time of his death he was employed at the Interurban station.  Mr. McKinney united with the Christian Church when a young boy.
  Survivors are two sons, Ward McKinney of Sherman and Hershall McKinney of Dallas; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two brothers, W.T. McKinney of Fort Worth and John R. McKinney of McKinney; three grandsons are in the armed forces, Lt. Lynn McKinney, a pilot to the army air forces in North Carolina; Joe Nathan McKinney of San Diego and Billie Roy McKinney in foreign service.

Mr. & Mrs. Jack McKinney were married Nov. 18, 1887, 51 years ago, at Cottage Hill, near Van Alstyne.  Mr. McKinney was born Dec. 3, 1860, on a farm two miles east of here.  Mrs. McKinney was born April 7, 1864, in Tennessee, and came to Texas in 1870.  He is 78.  She is 74.  Mr. McKinney has resided here all his life.  Mrs. McKinney has resided here for 68 years,  Both joined the Christian church 47 years ago.  They have two children and ten grandchildren.  Their children are Ward McKinney, Sherman, and Hershell McKinney, Dallas.
