Shurd Learoy Huddleston
11 October 1943 - 22 January 2010

Shurd "Learoy" Huddleston, age 66 of Van Alstyne, TX passed away January 22, 2010 at his home.  He was born on October 11, 1943 in Van Alstyne to Shurd and Beatrice (Headrick) Huddleston.  He graduated from Van Alstyne High School and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1970.  Learoy married Virginia Atkins on November 16, 2007 in Van Alstyne.  He retired from GTE Telephone Co. out of Sherman after 31 years of service.
Learoy was a big deer hunter and he collected guns.  Each year he saved his vacation time from work until deer season came from November 1st through January 1st.  That is how he spent his vacation each year.  He and Virginia would go and spend two weeks at a time, and most times each of them would come home with a deer.  He wore a hat that said "Born to Hunt.  Forced to Work".  The past three years he has been ill and couldn't go as often, but if you wanted to know anything about any kind of gun, Learoy could tell you.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Huddleston of Van Alstyne, TX; daughter, Julie Molder and husband Scott of Bedford, TX; two grandchildren, Aaron and Meredith Molder of Bedford, TX; one brother, Charles Douglas Huddleston and wife Joyce of Luella, TX; three step-children, Rikki Jones and Ricky Atkins of Van Alstyne, TX and Jeff Atkins and wife, Julie of Weston, TX; eight step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews.  Learoy was preceded in death by his son, Darrell Lee Huddleston; sister, Betty McClusky; two half-brothers, Billy Frank and Lewis Huddleston; half-sister, Louise Borkholm; mother, Beatrice Huddleston and father, Shurd Huddleston.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 pm Monday, January 25, 2010 at Flesher Funeral Chapel in Van Alstyne with Bro. Bobby Hash officiating.  Interment will follow at Van Alstyne Cemetery.  Visitation will be held at 1:30 pm, Monday, one hour prior to the service.
