Charles Wayland "Ozzie" Osburn was born August 17, 1934 in the Valdasta community, near McKinney, Collin County, Texas, to Paul Allen and Thelma Combest Osburn. He passed away on September 4, 2013 in his home near Pilot Point with family members by his side. Visitation for family and friends will occur Friday, September 6, 2013 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Slay Memorial Funeral Center in Aubrey. A memorial service will also be held at the Slay Chapel in Aubrey on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. with internment immediately following at Tioga Cemetery. Dr. Jim Grotts, Dr. Toby Osburn, and Bro. Craig Tullis will officiate.
His parents move the family to the Friendship community near Pilot Point in 1938. He attended Friendship School until it merged with the Pilot Point ISD where Osburn graduation from Pilot Point High School in 1951. He married Lois Ann Bradford of Tioga on August 18, 1961 at the Pilot Point Church of Christ and was a member of that church at the time of his passing.
Osburn was a self-employed general contractor constructing buildings, barns, fences, training arenas, and related structures in the equine industry throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Michigan for almost forty years. Prior to owning his own business he worked as a crew foreman and site superintendent on cooling tower construction projects for J.F. Pritchard and Company (Kansas City, Missouri), and MASCO Engineers and Contractors (Holdenville, Oklahoma). In recent years he was a licensed real estate agent and served on the Denton County Appraisal Review Board. He also contributed to his community by serving as president of the Pilot Point PTA, baseball coach for Pilot Point youth sports, member of the Denton County Taxpayer's Association, member of the Denton County Historical Commission, and as an elder in the Aubrey Church of Christ. He was a farmer and a rancher, loved cowboy movies and microwave popcorn, and was a genuine patriot who truly believed the United States of American to be the greatest nation in the world. He was a long-time member of the Southwest Football Officials Association and refereed middle- and high-school football games throughout the North Texas area for many years. Ozzie loved children, and many a youngster benefited from his work as a sponsor of sports teams and active band booster. More attended summer church camp thanks to his quiet generosity.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years and caregiver throughout his battle with Alzheimer's, Lois Ann; a daughter, Tammy Ann Oveross and husband Mike of Pilot Point; a son, Dr. Toby Wayland Osburn and wife Chris of Lake Charles, Louisiana; five granddaughters : Dovie Ann Rabe and husband Carl of Sanger; Hollie Michele Lee and husband Jason of Tuttle, Oklahoma; Mattie Elizabeth Oveross of Pilot Point; Georgia Gandy Osburn and Whitney Van-Eton Osburn of Lake Charles, Louisiana; and three great-grandsons : Joey Adam Rabe, Jonas Keb Lee, and Jude Wayland Lee. He is also survived by a brother, Wendell Allen Osburn and wife Naomi of Decatur, Texas; sisters LaJuana Ruth Shelley of California and Paula Wynelle Busby of Fort Worth, Texas, and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends throughout the United States and Canada.
He was preceded in death by his parents and oldest brother, United States Marine Corps Private 1st Class Vail Eton Osburn, who died in the Pacific theatre of World War II on December 6, 1943.
The family acknowledges the wonderful support and assistance of the staff of Solaris Hospice. The family also acknowledges the loving kindness of Ozzie's sister-in-law, Nadine Graves, in caring for him, as well as the help and support of daughter Tammy, granddaughters Dovie and Mattie, a great-niece Caitlin McWhorter Tucker and sister-in-law Joyce Kays and her husband Fred. Memorial gifts are encouraged in his honor to Pilot Point Church of Christ Summer Camp Fund or the Pilot Point Community Library.
