Jack Hubert Johnson, 22-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. M.H. Johnson of Bells and holder of a citation for gallantry during the Pearl Harbor attack, was reported among those lost in the crash of a Catalina flying boat into San Francisco Bay Sunday.
Born and reared at Bells, Johnson enlisted in the navy in August,1939. Stationed at Pearl Harbor, he was ready to board a boat for Pensacola, Florida to start aviation training when the Japanese attacked December 7.

Leaving Hawaii later for Pensacola, he visited his parents at Bells in January 1942, and received his citation in March of the same year.  After graduation as a flier from Pensacola last summer, Johnson was stationed near San Diego.
He and his wife, Jo Ann, made their home at Oakland.
Aside from his parents and widow, survivors include a brother, Lewis Franklin Johnson, in navy service in the Atlantic; and two uncles residing in Denison, Earl Hassell, and M.O. Hassell.
