JERNIGAN FUNERAL SLATED AT BELLS

Bells - - - J.L. Jernigan, 79, farmer, grocer and community leader at Bells for many years, died suddenly from a heart attack Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Lubbock, where he had resided for the last 8 years.  Funeral services will be held at the Bells Methodist Church Thursday at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. James Gatlin, pastor, and Rev. Fred Mooring of Sherman officiating.
The body will be at the home of his da ughter, Mrs. Opal Young, tonight and until the funeral.   Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery with the Masons in charge of services at the grave.  The Earnhart Funeral Home of Whitewright will be in charge.
Jernigan was born in Georgia, July 23, 1877, and came to Bells with his parents as a youngster.  He farmed for several years in the Calamus community and operated a grocery store in Bells for 20 years.  Jernigan served 25 years as a member of the Bells school board.  He was a Master Mason and had served as Sunday School Superintendent of the  Methodist Church.
He married Miss Margaret Taylor in Savoy, January 9, 1898.  After her death in 1939 he married Miss Gussie Gammill in Lubbock in 1948.
Aside from his wife, he is survived by 4 sons, Cecil Jernigan and Melvin Jernigan, both of Ivanhoe; Elmer Jernigan, Lubbock; and Earl Jernigan, Gallup, New Mexico; 3 daughters, Mrs. Ethel Moore, Denison; Mrs. Mary O'Dell, San Diego; and Mrs. Opal Young, Bells; and 5 brothers and sisters; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and 3 stepsons.
