SON OF POSTMASTER AT BELLS KILLED BY CAR THERE SUNDAY
James William (Jimmie) McElligott, 5-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. D.T. McElligott of Bells, was struck and killed by an automobile about 10 a.m. Sunday as he ran across the highway in front of his home on his way to Sunday School.  Glen Earnheart of Whitewright was en route to Bells to complete arrangements for the funeral of Mrs. J.L. Jernigan of Bells Sunday afternoon when his car struck the child.
Witnesses said the accident could not have been avoided by Mr. Earnheart, who applied his brakes, sounded his horn and tried to dodge the child, who never looked toward the car as he ran onto the highway.  Mr. Earnheart picked up the child in his arms and a passing truck took them to the home of a Bells physician.  After a brief examination, he was started to a Sherman hospital but died after going a short distance.
Funeral services were held at Bells at 3 p.m. Monday, conducted by Rev. E.J. Holifield, Bells Methodist pastor, and Rev. J.B. Hibbert of Trenton, former pastor.  Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, directed by the Earnheart Funeral Service.
The boy is survived by his parents; two sisters; and one brother.
