SHERMAN - Margaret Ann Hill, well-known Sherman banker, acclaimed for her public service, died Monday, August 24, 2010 at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas. Dannel Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 27, 2010, at First Baptist Church of Sherman. Louella Williams, pastor of Virginia Point United Methodist Church officiated, assisted by Dr. Mike Lawson of First Baptist Church, Sherman. Interment followed at Rose Hill Cemetery in Bells.
Margaret was born in Bells to Hobart M. and Ina Mae Nelms Pike. After graduating from Bells High School, she pursued higher education first at Grayson County College and then the University of Texas at Dallas, completing a B.S. in business and public administration. She also completed advanced study at the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking of Southern Methodist University. She married Dale Hill on August 14, 1951 at the First Baptist Church of Tom Bean. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Bells.
Having completed almost 58 years in the banking business, she began in 1952 with Merchants and Planters National Bank in Sherman and was currently senior vice president at Bank of Texas. Steve Jones, president of Bank of Texas, commented: "Few people in the Sherman-Denison area can match Margaret's credentials and reputation. Her devotion to her customers and her community is a rarity."
When recognized for fifty years in the banking business, Margaret said "In my early days the work was hard, but I enjoyed it because I knew nearly everyone who came in and out of the bank. People seemed to have more time, and our primary goal was 'fast, courteous service with a smile.' We have evolved with the times, yet the basics of banking are still the same."
Margaret's public service was legendary, having earned her an Athena Award from the Sherman Chamber of Commerce and the Vocational Service Award by Rotary International. Among the many organizations whose boards she served on were Home Hospice of Grayson County, Juvenile Alternatives, Greater Sherman Area Chamber of Commerce, Wilson N. Jones Hospital Foundation, Grayson Community College Foundation, Texoma Housing Finance Corporation, and Grayson County United Way. A long-time member of Friends of Sherman Public Library, she had served as its president. As a GCC alumna, she chaired the College's Campaign 2000 for student scholarships. She was a member and former president of Sherman Altrusa. She was also actively involved in the Sherman Noon Lions Club as well as a board member.
Preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Mary Frances Durham and Ola Belle Harris, Margaret is survived by her husband of 59 years, Dale Hill; a niece, Carol Waldrip and husband, Johnny, of Sherman; and a nephew, Kenneth Durham
and wife, Carol Ann, of Bells, as well as two godchildren which the Hills loved as their own children: Casey Martin Prichard of Bells and Robert Lee Prichard and wife, Theresa, of Bells.

Pallbearers were Doyle Barton, A.D. "Red" Bateman, Dwight Fleming, Dr. Bill Gray, Jr., Steve Jones and Ben Wible.
Phil McKinzie, Col. James M. Shankles and David Whitlock were honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to the Dale and Margaret Ann Hill Scholarship Funds at Austin College or Grayson County College.
