Mary Laoice Daniell Carter
6 February 1922 - 13 October 2008

wed 23 December 1941

Mary Laoice Carter was born in Cale, Arkansas on February 6, 1922 and departed this life on October 13, 2008.  Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 15, 2008 with burial following at Rose Hill Cemetery.  Mary worked for Johnson Telephone Co. in Hedley and Clarendon until giving birth to her only child, Michael, in 1950. That same year her husband was hired by Montgomery Ward and the family relocated to Sherman. In 1952, Mary began a long career with Texas Telephone, which became GTE and finally Verizon Communications. She retired after almost 38 years but maintained close relationships with many friends who had enjoyed their years working together.

Leon Carter went home to be with his Lord on Monday, March 15, 2010. He was born July 5, 1921 near Cale, Ark. of parents Virgil Carter and Levie Fairchild Carter. He was the youngest and last survivor of the family with four brothers, Amul, Raymond, Chester, Clyde, and one sister, Bradis.

His family still owns the land where he was born, but the Great Depression forced his father to leave Arkansas about 1928. He found work in the Texas panhandle near Clarendon but would eventually settle near Pink Hill, between Sherman and Bells. Leon graduated from Bells High School in 1938.
Leon's father died while he was still in school, so after graduation he moved back to Clarendon with his mother to be close to two of his brothers and sister. Two years later he met Mary Daniell who had been born only one mile from him in Arkansas and whose sister had married Leon's oldest brother. They married on Dec. 23, 1941 in Clarendon. In 1950, their only child was born and later that same year, Leon moved the family to Sherman to begin working for Montgomery Ward. For most of his career, he managed the furniture department at Montgomery Ward and retired after 25 years of service.
Mary and Leon were founding members of Texoma Squares square-dancing club in 1952 and thoroughly enjoyed their many friendships, continuing to dance well into their 80s. They were also very devoted to their Builder Uppers Sunday School class at Key Memorial United Methodist Church for over 45 years. Mary preceded Leon in death in October 2008, after 66 years of marriage.
Left to cherish his memory are son and wife, Michael and Anna Margaret Carter of Virginia, grandson, Trey Carter of Mansfield, granddaughter Ginger and her husband Paul Chapple of Lantana, granddaughter LeAnne and her husband Matt Buffington of Tulsa Okla., granddaughter, Lynne Davidson of Cypress, seven wonderful great grandchildren, brother-in-law, Bit Loe of Longview, and many nephews and nieces with more wonderful children of their own. Leon always considered his family God's greatest blessing!
His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 19 at Key Memorial United Methodist Church, in Sherman. The family will receive friends from 6 -8 p.m. Thursday at Mullican-Little Funeral Home on State Highway 56 between Bells/Savoy. Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund at Key Memorial, 901 E. Houston St., Sherman, TX 75090.
