JOE MEADOWS DEAD
Joe Meadows who had been in very poor health for the past two years, died at his home at Preston the past week.  In the death of Mr. Meadows Grayson County loses one of its best know citizens.  The deceased had been a constant visitor here ever since the town was incorporated, and but few outside people were better known than Joe Meadows, and certainly none were better like and more respected.  Joe Meadows was a free lance, (this expression should not be misunderstood), that is, he was free and easy with all people and had a manner - an open-hearted way - of moving among the masses that made him popular and loved by everyone.  Joe Meadows was a thoroughbred, and there never was a braver or more chivalrous man.  He was a type of the old school that have nearly all passed under the new order of things.  While he had scores of friends in Denison, all Preston loved, esteemed and trusted him.  Nearly all his life was passed at the little town on Red River.  He perhaps did more than anyone else to put Preston and that neighborhood in close touch with Denison.  It was through his efforts that each season the entire cotton of his section was marketed here.  He was one of the most loyal friends that this city ever had.  It was among the old timers that Mr. Meadows was best known and they will miss his familiar face most.  Joe Meadows believed that it was a blessed privilege to give, and was one of the most tender hearted men to an appeal to charity; in fact he never closed his purse strings to a needy man or woman, and he never took the trouble to find out whether his munificence had been abused.
Joe Meadows was born in Marshall County, Tenn., Sept. 11, 1952.  He came to Texas in 1877.  He was married at Preston Sept. 7, 1887, to Miss Alice Thompson.  For some years he was engaged in business at Preston, but lately had been giving his attention to farming and running his cotton gin.
Mr. Meadows leaves two sons, Exey and Ernest.  The funeral took place Friday and the interment was at the Thompson cemetery near Preston.
