Funeral services for Lem A. Matthews  [sic], 75, were held at the Church of Christ at 2:30 p.m. Monday, conducted by E.C. McKenzie, minister of the Leonard Church of Christ, assisted by Rev. J.A. Henderson, Baptist minister of Pilot Grove.  Interment was in Pilot Grove Cemetery under the direction of R.R. Waldo.   Pallbearers were Jesse Bow, Homer Sanderson, Howard Harrison, Allen T. Short, all of Whitewright; A.L. Smith of Leonard; and Wallace Caraway of Blue Ridge.
Mr. Mathews [sic] died at 10 p.m. Sunday at his home in west Whitewright after an illness of several months.
He was born June 9, 1862 in Warren County, Tennessee, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Matthews [sic].  He came to Grayson County in 1908 and was engaged in farming near Pilot Grove until advancing age forced him to retire.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Augie Matthews [sic]; four sons, E.R. Matthews [sic] of Leonard; A.J. Matthews [sic] of Tulsa; C.C. Matthews [sic[ of Muleshoe; and Tom Matthews [sic[ Whitewright; and six daughters, Mrs. Mary Baxter of Blue Ridge; Mrs. Luella Hutchins of Savoy; Mrs. Dollie Pierce of Zebulon, North Carolina; and Mrs. Minnie St. John, Mrs. Lillian McSpedden and Mrs. Jessie Stephens, of Whitewright.  All his children were present at the funeral except Mrs. Pierce.
Also surviving are one sister, Mrs. Zula St. John of Blue Ridge; and five brothers, Jim Matthews [sic] and Richard Matthews [sic] of Blue Ridge, who were here for the funeral; J.S. and John Matthews [sic], of Tennessee; and Alford Matthews [sic] of Indiana.  There were 23 surviving grandchildren.
Others from out of town who attended the funeral included Mr. and Mrs. Paul Matthews [sic] of Greenville; Mr. and Mrs. Ott Smith, Mrs. D.W. Smith, Mrs. Robert Sowels, Mrs. Joe Sudderth of Leonard; and Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Jones of Pike.
