Myrtle Dorthell Scott, age 89, passed away in Sherman, Texas on May 30, 2012. Services were held at Friendship United Methodist Church in Sherman on Saturday, June 2nd at 10:00 a.m.  Rev. Dan Hoke, Rev. Tom Medley and Rev. Jeffery Pruitt  officiated with assistance from Rev. Elaine Bussey. Interment followed at Pilot Grove Cemetery following services.

Dorthell was born in Marshall County, Oklahoma to Alfred Gardener Cowen and Melissa Paralee Lane on July 19, 1922. She moved to Texas with her family at 2 years old. She attended schools in Sedalia and Pilot Grove communities. On October 10, 1951 she married George Wilson Scott in Sherman. George preceded her in death on January 13, 1993. They had two sons together.
Dorthell, like her husband, was active at Friendship United Methodist Church for many years. After joining the church in 1959, Dorthell served in many capacities. She was President of the United Methodist Women, Chairperson of the Trustee Committee, Chairperson of the Administration Council for 4 years, and served on the Pastor Parish Relations Committee. Many in the church community will remember her as the long serving Sunday School Teacher of the Primary School children. She also served as Chairperson for the Fall chili and stew festival and bazaar which raised thousands of dollars for the church.
Dorthell was one of the original members of the Friendship UMC Sunshine Circle Quilting Group and Chairperson for many years. The Sunshine Circle has made dozens of quilts for church members and others in the community. All proceeds earned by the group were donated for church needs. Dorthell was passionate about quilting and was well known for her quilts both in and out of the church.
Dorthell loved gardening, time with her family and friends, and cooking, especially baking cakes and pies. Many people including family, friends, and neighbors were recipients of her many pies, cakes and other delights.
Dorthell is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and son, Lloyd Wilson Scott.
Surviving family members are son George Alfred Scott and wife Susan of Colleyville, Texas. Three granddaughters, Elizabeth Wallace and husband Garrett of Fort Worth, Christina Gafford and husband Ryan of Irving, and Melissa Blalock and husband Jim of Grapevine. Two great-grandchildren, Ethan Wallace and Brendan Gafford.
Pallbearers will be Glenn Waldrum, Art Waldrum, Larry Harrington, Charlie Pierce, Dane Young, and Chuck Wilson.
