FROM SOMEWHERE IN FRANCE
Oct. 28 - Dear Ones at Home: -
Received your letter.  Surely was glad to hear from you and that you are well.  I am liking France better every day; it is a very good country, but it does not look like old U.S.A.  I have seen a great deal of this country and expect to see more of it before I come back to Whitewright.  I have been in hearing distance of the big guns nearly all the time I have been over here.  I hope they will soon cease to roar.  But if they were to tell me I could start for home today, I would say, no; I will wait and go with the boys when it is over.
Tell mother I received those things she sent me.  They surely are nice, and I thank her very much.  Love to all.

France, Nov. 4, 1918 - If I remember correctly, it has been some four months since I last wrote you, and I thank God that I am able and lucky enough to get back where I can write and take life easy once more.  I am back for a rest now, and I do not think I will ever see that horrible old front line again.  We had a tough old time and on the toughest sector of the western front.  I know it is an honor, but it was hell.  We did great work and killed hundreds of Dutch and gained some important ground.  We are all happy.  The sun is shining bright and warm.  The grass is still green; everything looks good.  I just feel like I am coming home - I just know I will.  I have plenty of warm clothes and a warm place to sleep; plenty to eat.  I got 35 letters at one time the other day.  My buddie is still with me; we will be paid in a few days, will get a pass, and I am sure going to spread for a few days.  Dad, I will be back before long, and we will be pals again.  Tell everybody hello for me; I can't answer half the letters that I get.
