Silas Jackson, age 88, who lived in the Pilot Grove community for 69 years, died at the home of his son in the Whitemound community Sunday, January 18th.
Uncle Si, as he was affectionately called by all who knew him, was born April 2, 1837 in Arkansas.  He came to Texas with his parents at the age of 12, later settling at Pilot Grove, where he lived a quiet and happy life for more than three score years.
He was married to Miss Susan McDonald in 1855.  To them were born eleven children, five boys and six girls, all of whom are now living except one daughter, who died several years ago.
The following children survive: Jim Jackson, Van Alstyne; John Jackson, Calera, Oklahoma; Billie Jackson, Marlow, Oklahoma; Lena Jackson, Dallas; Mall Jackson, Tom Bean; Mrs. Annie Iveings, Grand Junction, Colorado; Mrs. Jennie Long, Harlingen; Mrs. Mattie Ross, Pilot Grove; Mrs. Nellie Cannon, Tom Bean; and Miss Esther Jackson, Tom Bean.
He is also survived by a brother and two sisters, Sam Jackson of Oklahoma, Mrs. Allie McDonald of New Mexico; and Mrs. Betty Sloan of Pilot Grove.
Uncle Si had been a member of Pilot Grove Baptist Church for 35 years, and was ever ready to lend a helping hand to his fellow man.  He was very industrious and economical and was a deal lover of home and his loved ones.
When the War between the States broke out, he heard the call of his country and served three years in the Confederate Army under Captain Beckett.
In 1917, his wife who had been his faithful helpmate through the many years, passed to the other side.  Being broken-hearted and lonely in the home he had loved so long, Uncle Si could not be comforted in the old scenes.  He decided to sell his farm and move to Whitemound, where he and his son John purchased a nice farm and he made his home with him.
Funeral services were held at the Pilot Grove church, attended by a large gathering of friends and relatives.  Services were conducted by Rev. J.A. Henderson, the pastor.  The body was laid to rest by loving hands in the Pilot Grove Cemetery, near the old home he loved so well.
Mr. Jackson was loved and respected by all who knew him.  His was a life of service to his family and his friends.  None called and went away empty handed.  His word was his bond.  May his life and his counsel be a stepping stone to his children to lead them to the highest plane of usefulness.
While we mourn, may we rejoice in the knowledge that we may meet again on yon bright shore where pain and death shall be no more. - - - A Friend.
