Death of George Bates
Mr. George D. Bates died at his residence on West Chestnut street, Thursday evening at 8 o'clock.  The funeral took place the next day at 3 o'clock, and was largely attended.  Mr. Bates had been sick almost 5 weeks. The case was a remarkable one. He had been enjoying, as he himself expressed it, remarkably good health during the winter.  He first took a severe cold from exposure, which developed in to pneumonia, followed in a few days by a pronounced type of yellow jaundice.  Dr. Hanna, who was attending him, had barely succeeded in getting both these diseased in check when Mr. Bates seized with inflammatory rheumatism.  From this he suffered severely, every joint in his body being swollen and inflamed.  A few days after inflammation of the bowels set in, making a complication of diseases, which his system could not resist.  He suffered excruciating pain, the last few days which opiates
would only partially alleviate.
Mr. Bates was a carpenter and house joiner by trade, and was engaged in business here as contractor and builder at the time of his decease.
He was among the first who cast their lot in Denison and many of the oldest structures in the city show his handiwork.  A few years ago he removed to Kansas City, where he was engaged in business until last summer when he returned with his family to Denison, to make it his home.  He was energetic and enterprising, a kind father and good citizen.  We knew him intimately, and realize that in his death we have lost a true friend.
Mr. Bates was about 45 years of age, and leaves a wife and 4 children - 3 boys  and a girl.
He leaves his family but little in worldly goods, but his oldest boy is about 17, and he is, we might say, the only aid the widow has to depend upon in the hard struggle before her to provide for herself and little ones.
The family have our warmest sympathy in this their irreparable loss.
