1854 - 1912

The Sunday Gazetteer
Sunday, March 17, 1912
pg. 4

This community was startled Tuesday morning by the report that John James was dead.  It was known that he he been feeble for several weeks but it was not thought he was in any immediate danger.  He passed away about 10 o'clock Monday night.  He was in the service of the city as a patrolman, but had recently been granted a vacation in the hope rest would restore him to health.
John James was one of our oldest citizens.  He came to Denison in 1873 from Missouri and had resided here ever since.  He served as policeman under his cousin, City Marshall Ed. James eight years, and filled the office of city marshall eight years.  A few years ago he was in the employ the M. K. & T. bridge department until appointed patrolman under the city commission.  John James was a good citizen and very popular with all classes, and there is universal sorrow expressed over his death, and the warmest sympathy expressed in behalf of the wife and children and other relatives.
Besides a widow and three children, two boys and a girl, he is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Charley and Forrest James of this city; Ed James of Arlington, Tex.; and W.L. James of Waco; Miss Sally James, Mrs. Stella Kemp and Mrs. Cora Newton of Denison and Mrs. Mary Nelson of Vancouver, B.C.  Ed. James, his cousin, who came to Denison about the same time as decedent is in Kansas City where he has been engaged in business the past year.
The funeral took place from the family residence at 3 o'clock Wednesday evening, which was conducted by Rev. E.W. Alderson, pastor of the Waples Memorial church.  There were many beautiful floral offerings.  Among the friends and acquaintances who gathered to pay their last respects to the departed were several of Denison's oldest citizens, who had known and associated with him for nearly fifty years.
