CLIMBED THE GOLDEN STAIRS
Thursday night Lucy Williams, a colored domestic living at the home of Conductor Burt Cox on Bond street, took an over dose of morphine and despite the efforts of Dr. Birch and a number of assistants, Lucy climbed the Golden Stairs near the hour of midnight.  The woman had been in a "world of trouble" with a rival concerning the hand of a lover and had been before the city court on a charge of fighting.  Through the kindness of friends, she soon cleared herself of all legal entanglements but the rival was not down.
Weary with life and not wishing to face the public in the roll of a fighting damsel a quantity of morphine was taken Wednesday evening.  She told Mrs. Cox what she had done but in a laughing manner stated that she would rather die than go back to jail.
She did die and on Thursday evening the body was interred in Oakwood cemetery.  She was about 19 or 20 years of age and has relatives living in Denison.
