DEATH BENEATH THE WHEELS
Missouri Pacific freight train No. 513 while pulling into the yards from the north about 6:15 Monday morning ran over a man near the foot of Gandy street, mangling his body in a fearful manner, so that he died a few minutes afterwards.  He was not seen when he fell beneath the wheels, but car inspector Geo. Carlat, going back to inspect the train as soon as it pulled in found him under a box car.  He was still breathing, but died a minute afterwards.  He had no doubt been stealing a ride in a box car and had attempted to crawl out of the opening in the rear of the car while the train was in motion.  A small hand satchel was found in one of the cars,  the broken strap of which was still around the unfortunate man's neck, and this it was no doubt, which catching on the walls of the small opening, had caused him to lose his balance, and fall between the cars.  In his pocket was found a memorandum, on the fly leaf of which was the name and address "Edward Groff, Krebs, I.T.," together with about $1.25 in money.  Personal letters of some interest from friends in Ft. Worth and Cincinnati, Ohio were found in his satchel, which were all addressed to "Ed."  Judge Cook was summoned and viewed the remains, after which he gave orders for their removal and burial at the expense of the county.  The deceased was about 26 years of age, and was married, but was not living with his wife, as his letters disclosed.  The remains were buried Monday in the Potters' field.
