Josiah Mendum Tarr
Born 20 December 1819 Lewiston, Androscoggin, Maine
Died 11 October 1882 Macomb, Grayson, Texas
married Mary Delia Sawyer 17 September 1844 Lowell, Middlesex, Massachusetts

"My uncle, Hugh A Johnson, published in 1976, a family genealogy (Library of Congress Catalog Card Number 76-12973).

In the book, The Ancestry and Descendants of Josiah Mendum Tarr and Mary Delia Sawyer, he writes that JMT moved his family to McComb (interesting that the spelling is consistently wrong as Uncle High was a diligent researcher and very detailed oriented)  during early 1874. He writes that this was on the first train into Sherman from Little Rock.

He writes:

"They located near the small settlement called McComb, some 18 miles southwest of Sherman. McComb was then the largest town in the county.  It began shrinking after the railroad reached Sherman. Hardly a sign remains of McComb today, other than the graveyard. The first tombstone erected in this graveyard, incidentally, was for Josiah Mendum Tarr. The McComb Cemetery is about 2 miles east and 2 miles north of Collinsville, Texas. The Tarr tombstone is of white marble, very worn and broken in 1972, but was still legible. The foot maker showed only "J.M....:, the "T" was missing. J.M. Tarr was shown as "aged 62 years, 9 mos and 21 days.

We visited the cemetery on July 26, 2009, and found a gravestone that had been repaired with the name Josiah M. and the following letter looked as if it had the top part of a "T".  It is near an evergreen at  the center of the cemetery. It is set in concrete on top of the ground, and this may not be the original location. We did not find the foot marker that my uncle had found in 1972, so if it is ever found it would be nice to have it near the gravestone.

There is  a lot more written about the life of  Josiah Mendum Tarr, my great great grandfather, who lived in Massachusetts and in Wisconsin before coming to Texas.
