Deceased Pioneer Had Lived in Grayson County Fifty Years

W. E. Jones, pioneer Grayson county resident, who died Saturday  morning and was buried that afternoon, moved to Grayson county fifty years ago and has lived within five miles of Denison since the city was founded. Mr. Jones hauled the lumber to Denison with which the old Alamo Hotel, which stood where the State National Bank now stands, was constructed. He also helped cut the right of way for the Main street road which connects Denison with Carpenter's Bluff.
Mr. Jones, who was almost 70 years old at the time of his death, was born in Texas, near Palestine. He was a brother of Dr. J. L. Jones, who died in 1903. His wife died in 1894. Mr. Jones has been a subscriber of The Heard since its foundation and he had stated that he had never missed reading an issue. His memory was remarkable and he could recall many events, which The Hearld had carried, which the average reader had forgotten. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Cordie Miller and Mrs. Fred Stitzel, 1923 West Chestnut street, both of Denison; three sons, Joe and Arthur, who lived with their father on his farm four  miles east of the city, and Will, who lived on a farm eight miles east of Denison. Two of Mr. Jones' children died in innfancy. Heart disease caused his death. He was buried Saturday afternoon in the Jones & Lankford cemetery, east of the city. Rev. Thomas Lashley read the funeral sermon. Swank was in charge of the funeral.
