U.S. Veteran Leonard D. Cox, 91, passed away at his home on August 5, 2016,  He was born May 14, 1925 in Oglesby, Texas and worked to help his family survive the Great Depression after completing the 8th grade.
He married Shirley Clopton on the day she graduated from Moody High School in 1943 and spent the next 71 years together.  Shortly after they married, Leonard served in the U.S. Army Air Force in the Phillippines during World War II, for which he earned 2 Bronze Stars of Valor.  After completing his service, he returned home and attained his GED and went on to further his education at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, all the while working and supporting his young family.  Leonard spent many years employed by Collins Radio and Texas Instruments and moved his family to Sherman in 1966.  He later became a real estate broker and operated a real estate office in Sherman with Shirley in the 1980s.
Leonard was preceded in death in 2014 by his wife.
He is survived by his son, Larry Cox and wife, Anna, of Sherman; daughter, Susan Kavanaugh and husband, Mike, of San Pedro, California; daughter, Lisa Vinoles of Sherman; 5 grandchildren - Brian Kavanaugh of San Pedro, California; Tracy Polizzi and husband, Ryan, of Charlotte, North Carolina; Jeff Anderson and Jennifer Webb of Sherman; Danny Anderson and wife, Elizabeth, of Denver, Colorado; and Sam Krider of Sherman; one great-grandson, Jake Kavanaugh of San Pedro, California.
Memorial services were scheduled for Monday, August 8, 2016 with Rev. Jimmy Greene officiating. Graveside services followed at Holloway Cemetery on Luella Road, Sherman.

LUELLA - Funeral services for Shirley Marie Cox were held Wednesday at Waldo Funeral Home. Rev. Danny Wood of the West Sherman Baptist Church officiated. Burial followed at Holloway Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were her three brothers, Lyle Clopton, Richard Clopton, LD Clopton and her four grandsons.
Mrs. Cox, 88, passed away Saturday June, 21 in Denison. Shirley was born November 9, 1925 in Jefferson, Iowa to the late Lester and Mildred (Cairns) Clopton. Shirley was a talented musician and traveled in the family band, "Lester and the Kings of Harmony" for several years during the Great Depression. She graduated as salutatorian from Moody High School in 1943 and married Leonard Cox on May 28, 1943 in McGregor, Texas.
They moved to Sherman in 1966 where she and Leonard worked together in the real estate business. In retirement, she thoroughly enjoyed living on Bent Creek Lake where she fished, watched the water-skiers, and took great pride in mowing and maintaining her yard. Shirley was an avid Cowboys fan and a longtime member of West Sherman Baptist Church.
Mrs. Cox is survived by her husband of 71 years, Leonard of Luella; son, Larry Cox and wife Anne of Luella; two daughters, Lisa Vinoles of Sherman and Susan Kavanaugh and husband Mike of San Pedro, California; five grandchildren, Brian Kavanaugh of San Pedro, California, Tracy Polizzi and husband Ryan of Charlotte, North Carolina, Jeff Anderson of Sherman, Daniel Anderson and wife Elizabeth of Dallas, and Sam Krider of Sherman; one great grandchild, Jake Kavanaugh; three brothers, Lyle Clopton and Richard Clopton, both of Garland, and LD Clopton and wife Gretchen of Harlingen; and one sister, Nancy Bunch and husband James of Bonham.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, David and Gary Clopton and three sisters, Twylla Maddux, Marcella Parker, and Rita Anderson.
The family would like to express their gratefulness and sincere appreciation to Donna and her staff for the wonderful care they provided Shirley at Nanaw's Place in Denison.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association National Office, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601.
