DENISON. Memorial Services for Dr. Roger A. Powell Jr., 70, of Denison will be held Saturday, June 22, at 2 p.m. at Hebron Baptist Church, Bells, Texas. Roger passed away at his home on Monday, June 17, 2013, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Bro. Houston Garner will officiate assisted by Dr. Ronald Cunningham. The service will be followed by refreshments and family visitation for all who attend.
Dr. Powell was born March 5, 1943, in Brownwood, Texas, the son of Roger A. Powell and Doris Johnson Powell. He grew up in the Central Texas Area. Roger graduated from Coleman High School, Coleman, Texas, in 1961. He attended Tarleton State College, Stephenville for two years before transferring to Texas A&M University, College Station. While at A&M he received his bachelors degree in architectural construction in 1966, followed by a masters degree in urban and regional planning in 1968, and a Ph.D. in civil engineering in 1972. He earned a master of science degree in 2006 from Texas A&M University-Commerce and a Ph.D. in educational psychology in 2011. He married Patsy Lieuene Kemp July 30, 1966, in Coleman.
Dr. Powell had a varied and successful career as a planning consultant working for several large engineering firms as well as having his own consulting business, Powell & Associates. Many of the counties and cites in Texas a well as other states benefited from his expertise in city, land use, and transportation planning.
The second half of his career was devoted to grant writing aimed primarily to workforce training. He worked for Paris Junior College, Grayson County College, and Texas A&M University-Commerce. He was a member of the American Institute of Planners; Certified Municipal Judge; Cambridge Who's Who, Directory of Executives and Professionals, Honors Edition, 2007-2008; Licensed Law Enforcement Instructor, TCLEOSE, 1997; Licensed Texas Peace Officer, American Mensa Society; Masonic Lodge of Texas, Houston Scottish Rite; and numerous other organizations. He retired in 2008. Roger was a member of Hebron Baptist Church.
His hobbies included reading, genealogy, hunting, and a variety of other interests. He was very committed to life-long learning and established a number of endowed scholarships at Grayson County College to assist deserving students achieve their educational goals.
Dr. Powell is survived by his wife, Patsy; daughter, Lisa Powell of Houston; brother, Bill Powell and wife Linda of Stephenvillle; mother, Doris Powell of Stephenville; sister-in-law, Ann Wilson and husband Michael of Coleman; uncle, O.D. Johnson;, three nephews; one niece; and a number of cousins.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Grayson County College Foundation, 6101 Grayson Drive, Denison, TX 75020, or Home Hospice of Grayson County, 505 W. Center St., Sherman, TX 75090.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the staff of Home Hospice for their loving care and support and Dr. Alex Ehson and his staff.
