Dorothy Block of Anna, Texas passed away on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at Medical Center of McKinney. She was born on October 17, 1918 in Cold Springs, Texas and grew up in the Cold Springs/Van Alstyne Area. Dorothy and Dayton married in 1938 and lived in Gunter all of their married lives until they moved to Anna to live with Carole and James in 2002. Both Dorothy and Dayton were members of the First United Methodist Church in Van Alstyne. They owned and operated the mobil (Magnolia) gas station at the corner of Preston and Main in Gunter beginning in 1941 for 25 years. In the mid 1950s they added a Car Wash and Laundromat which they continued to operate after retirement from the gas station. In the mid 1950s Dorothy also operated the "little store" near the Gunter High School for about 5 years where she made hamburgers at lunch time and sold school supplies. Hamburgers were 15 cents each.
Services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, May 24, 2014 at Scoggins Funeral Home in Van Alstyne. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 am. Reverend Dennis Garner of Gunter will officiate.  Burial will follow at the Gunter Cemetery.
She is survived by her daughter, Carole, and son-in-law James "Coach" Carter of Anna. Grandson Eric and his wife Misti, great-grandson Jack, age 7, and Mason, Age 5, of College Station. Nephews, Gary Lewallen and wife Nita of Frisco and James Ables and wife Randa of Slidell, La. Cousins, Pat Chitty and Nellie Phillips of Van Alstyne and Billye Smith of Mc Kinney. Brother-in law and sister-in-law Jimmy and Audrey Block of Blaine, Wa.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Dayton, her sister Alla Jean Ables, and her parents Bruce and Elma Hestand.
Services are under the direction of Scoggins Funeral Home, 637 W. Van Alstyne Parkway, Van Alstyne. 903-482-5225
