Mr. Payne, 60, died Tuesday of a brain aneurysm at his home in Garland.  Services were held Saturday at New Liberty Baptist Church in Garland.  Burial was in Gunter Cemetery, Gunter, Texas.
Mr. Payne was born and raised in Gunter and graduated from Gunter High School in 1965.  He served in the Army during the Vietnam War until 1968, earning two Purple Hearts.  In 1971 he began working for the Van Alstyne Police Department.  In 1974 he moved to Garland and started with the Garland Police Department, where he served until retirement in October 2004.  Paul Thomas Payne was a warrant officer, peace office and 10-year honor guard member during his three decades with the Garland Police Department.
Survivors include his wife, Diane Payne; daughters, Heather Moses of Rowlett and Penny Murley of Van Alstyne; son, Jason Payne of Garland; mother, Betty Payne of Gunter; two brothers, Jerry Payne of Plano and Larry Payne of Gunter; and seven grandchildren.
